                                                Freedom of Speech?

I was having a conversation with a colleague the other day, and as I listened to him rant and rave about what some politician was saying, I wondered if he was aware of what he was doing. He stated that the politician was interpreting the Constitution incorrectly and that the Constitution is not open to interpretation. What? Of course it is!

It occurred to me that the same people who cloak themselves in the Constitution are the first to cry "foul" when someone says or does something that they disagree with. My colleague was unhappy with the fact that this politician is trying to garner support for a proposition that he, my colleague, disapproves of. Okay, I told him, you don't have to support the idea, but he has the right to propose it. H felt that the politician was trying to circumvent the Constitution to force his idea through congress.

The Constitution does have a few checks and balances that help prevent those things from happening, and unless or until it passes, it's just an idea, and the Constitution does defend the right to think and have ideas. It amazes me that people can be so fervent in their defense of the Constitution until it defends another person's rights to free speech and expression. If it's contrary to HIS opinion, it is against the Constitution.
